Writing Prompt: Presidents’ Day
Presidents’ Day … is this something we really need?? Don’t get me wrong; I love an official day off and, depending on when the first full moon after the Spring Equinox falls, the timing can be a nice oasis between the work reprieve of the New Year’s holiday and that provided by Easter.
But are presidents what need to be held up for celebrating and honoring?
Let’s be clear. I’ve thought this for years, long before Trump became president. But I’ll admit that my disgruntlement with the subject of this holiday certainly soured more after his “reign” (which, sadly, seems to be continuing even while out of office).
What about Secretaries’ Day—as an official, day off, national holiday? Or Janitors’ Day? Or Childcare Workers’ Day? Or Trash Collectors’ Day? Or Emergency Care Workers’ Day? Or Those-Who-Adopt-Abandoned-Animals’ Day? Or The-People-Who-Clean-Litter-Out-Of-Waterways’ Day? Or Freelance Musicians’ Day? Or … I can think of a lot of vocations and categories of people who probably deserve our adoration and singling out more than presidents.
But until then …
I’m not going to complain about getting a day off!
